Building with Blocks

Building with Blocks

Dex uses Blocks, the core elements for creating content. Blocks can be placed individually to highlight key information or combined into a sequence to form complete pages and presentations. Each block comes with predefined colors and sample content, so templates look polished from the start and provide a clear example to build on.

Template

The block library is organized into categories, each tailored for different types of content. Templates within these categories provide ready-made structures that can be used directly or customized as needed. Templates from different categories can also be combined to create structured content that flows as a complete story.

  • Hero: bold sections designed to introduce or frame key messages.

  • Text: clean layouts for paragraphs, explanations, or narrative content.

  • Bullets: structured lists for highlights, steps, or key points.

  • Stats: data-driven layouts to showcase metrics, KPIs, or milestones.

  • Text + Image: balanced sections combining text with visuals for better storytelling.

  • Image: full-width or focused image blocks to illustrate or emphasize content.

  • Process: blocks designed to explain workflows, timelines, or step-by-step progressions.

  • Team and Contributors: layouts to introduce teams, highlight members, and showcase contributions.

Edit and customize blocks

Once a block is inserted, it can be customized to match the content needs. Text is edited directly inline, with changes visible immediately.

For more control, selecting the block in the sidebar or preview opens its settings drawer, where layout and style options can be adjusted. Available settings vary depending on the block category and its content.

Block settings are available at different levels, giving flexibility while keeping design consistent.

General Settings

Global settings apply to all cards within the module and ensure a consistent appearance across the entire layout. Shared options include styling controls such as corner rounding and other visual preferences. Changes made in global settings affect all displayed blocks.

Presentation can be saved in either page or presentation modes.

Block-Level Settings

When a block is selected, additional options become available. These include toggles (Yes/No pickers) to hide or show elements, as well as color options that override the general palette for that block only.

Component-Level Settings

Inside each block, individual components (such as cards, macros, or images) have their own settings. These options provide more detailed control, for example, styling a card or adjusting an image.

Text is always edited inline for simplicity and immediate feedback.

Delete and duplicate blocks

Blocks can be removed or copied in two ways:

  1. Right-click menu

    • In the left sidebar, right-click a block to open the dropdown menu.

    • Select Delete to remove the block.

    • Select Duplicate to create a copy of the block.

  2. Keyboard shortcuts

    • Duplicate a block:

      • Windows: Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V and

      • macOS: Command + C and Command + V

    • Delete a block

Inline text editing

Text inside blocks is edited directly inline, so changes are visible immediately. Titles do not include formatting options to keep headings consistent and clean. For most of other text areas, formatting options appear when text is highlighted. Available options include: Bold, Italic, Underline, Link, Bulleted lists, and Numbered lists.
